HKBU Dean of School of Business receives prestigious international honour in information systems

Professor Zhang Han, Dean of the School of Business and Chair Professor of the Department of Management, Marketing and Information Systems (MMIS) at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), has recently been presented the prestigious 2025 INFORMS Information Systems Society (ISS) Distinguished Fellow Award, one of the highest honours in the field of information systems, in recognition of his outstanding contributions and profound impact in the discipline.
The ISS is a subdivision of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences, known as INFORMS, which is the leading international association for operations research and analytics professionals. The award also celebrates scholars whose work bridges theoretical foundations and practical applications, and demonstrates a strong commitment to mentoring doctoral students and nurturing the next generation of academic leaders.
As an internationally prominent scholar in the field of information systems, Professor Zhang’s research has significantly advanced understanding in areas such as online trust and reputation, online word-of-mouth, and human-artificial intelligence (AI) interaction, and with his works being extensively published in top-tier academic journals.
Professor Zhang is the first scholar of Chinese origin to receive both the INFORMS ISS Distinguished Fellow Award and the Association for Information Systems (AIS) Fellow Award. The AIS Fellow Award, which he received in 2023, honours individuals who have made exceptional contributions to information systems through research, teaching, and service globally and locally. This double honour highlights Professor Zhang’s global academic leadership and profound impact in the discipline.
Professor Zhang expressed his gratitude for the support he has received throughout his career, especially from HKBU and the Georgia Institute of Technology in the US. He also acknowledged the vital contributions of his colleagues and PhD students, whose collaboration and dedication have been instrumental to his academic journey and success.
Professor Zhang assumed the role of Dean of the School of Business at HKBU in January 2025. Before that, he was the Steven A. Denning Professorship of Technology & Management at the Scheller College of Business, Georgia Institute of Technology in the US, where he also served as Faculty Director of the Denning Technology & Management Programme. With his visionary leadership, the HKBU School of Business is ushering in a new chapter of growth and collaboration, and is actively creating a transdisciplinary learning and cutting-edge research environment in the intersecting fields of “AI x Business x Technology”.
